This is to inform all those who applied to FUTA for admission that the JAMB and departmental cut off mark for each course is out and you can now check yours to see your chances of admission.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is one of Nigeria most prestigious institutions, known for producing highly skilled graduates in technology and engineering-related fields. Every year, thousands of students apply to FUTA for admission into one of the undergraduate courses offered in the school. One of the important requirements for gaining admission is meeting the cut-off mark for the desired course.

What is a Cut-Off Mark?

A cut-off mark is the minimum score required by an institution to consider candidates for admission into its courses. Sometimes, meeting scoring above this score does not guarantee admission but allows candidates to be considered for admission in the institution.

For FUTA, candidates are required to meet both the JAMB cut-off mark and the departmental cut-off mark depending on the course the applicant has chosen.

FUTA JAMB Cut Off Mark

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) sets a general cut-off mark for all universities, and for FUTA, the JAMB cut-off mark is 180. This means that candidates who scored at least 180 in their UTME are eligible to apply for the Post-UTME screening exercise conducted by the university and to also be considered for admission.

FUTA Departmental Cut Off Mark for 2024/2025

After the Post-UTME screening, FUTA releases departmental cut-off marks for each course following the JAMB guidelines for cut off marks. These marks are calculated based on a combination of your JAMB score and Post-UTME performance. How to Calculate FUTA Aggregate Score

FUTA uses a weighted system to calculate a candidate’s aggregate score, which determines whether the candidate meets the departmental cut-off score for admission. In this system, both your JAMB score and post UTME screening score are considered. Here is how you can calculate it:

Step 1: Your JAMB score has 50% and it is divided by 8. For example, if you scored 240 in JAMB, it would be:
240/8 = 30

Step 2: Your Post-UTME also has a total of 50%. For instance, if you scored 70 out of 100 in the Post-UTME, it would be:
70×0.5 = 35

Step 3: To get your total aggregate score, simply add your JAMB score to your Post-UTME score. In this case: 30 + 35 = 65%

So, it simply means that if you scored 240 in JAMB and you applied to FUTA, your aggregate score

You would then compare this aggregate score to the departmental cut-off marks to know your admission chances.

Tips to Improve Your Chances of Admission

1. Score High in JAMB: The higher your JAMB score, the better your chances of meeting the aggregate score/departmental cut-off mark.
2. Prepare for Post-UTME: Many students overlook the importance of the Post-UTME exam. Purchase post UTME past questions for the institutions you applied to, study it thoroughly.
3. Consider Less Competitive Courses: If you don’t meet the cut-off for your desired course, applying for a course with lower cut off mark might be a good option. However, in a case where you are determined to study a particular course then, retaking JAMB is the best option.
4. Stay Updated: Ensure to stay updated with FUTA news. Join FUTA Facebook groups and follow their pages. If there are whatsapp groups available, also join.

What to do if you don’t meet FUTA admission requirements

If you don’t meet the criteria for admission at FUTA, there are still several options you can consider to achieve your academic goals. Here’s what you can do:

1. Apply for a Change of Course

If your JAMB score or Post-UTME score doesn’t meet the departmental cut-off mark for your preferred course, you can apply for a change of course to a less competitive one with a lower cut-off mark. This may be the best option if you are really in dare need of admission.

2. Consider Pre-Degree or JUPEB Program

FUTA offers pre-degree programs like JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board), which allow students to gain direct entry admission into 200-level after a year of study. Many students have gone through this methid to secure admission for themselves.

However, joining this program does not guarantee admission as you have so many other interested candidates to compete with.

3. Consider Admission into Other Universities

While FUTA is an excellent institution, it is not the only option. If you don’t meet the admission criteria, you can explore other federal, state, or private universities that may have lower cut-off marks or different admission criteria.

4. Explore Polytechnic or College of Education Options

If you are open to alternatives, you can apply to polytechnics or colleges of education. These institutions always have lower admission requirements and provide quality education.

5. Retake JAMB for Better Scores

If you are determined to study at FUTA, you can take a year to prepare and retake the JAMB exam to score higher and improve your chances of meeting the required cut-off mark.

6. Private Universities

If fees are not the problem, you can apply to private universities that offer similar courses with better admission criteria. Some private universities have lower JAMB cut-off marks and might also offer scholarships or financial aid based on their outlined criteria.
